Your informational guide to Taranabant
With obesity being such a huge problem in society today, there is a large demand for medications fighting it. And currently there is a new medication in the works which has been given the generic name Taranabant. There is still no official trademarked name for which Merck will most certainly obtain. It is still in the trial stages of development/testing but apparently Merck will apply to the FDA sometime 2008. What does this mean? Well that there could be shortly a new medication to fight obesity available in the US. Earlier in 2007, Rimonabant was voted against being recommended for the US. Although there are many other countries using it now.
Basically for those who understand it, Taranabant is a cannabinoid-1 (CB-1) receptor inverse agonist. What is that you may ask, well exactly... not too many will that make sense to. But what people do want to know is that it is looking positive that the side effects of this medication will be very minimal. And trial studies have shown this so far. As more testing is done, this site will keep you informed on the outcomes.
Being overweight has been linked to many health problems and since there is such a large percentage of the population in developed countries that are overweight, there is a large market to produce the ultimate diet drug. Merck is not the only one seeking after such a product. Many other pharmaceutical companies are equally investigating and testing various compounds. Whatever the tests show for any of these products, if any make it to the final tests, they still need to be approved by the FDA before being allowed in the US market.
So for now, everyone just needs to be patient in seeing the outcomes of the trails any medication for obesity goes through. In time you can be assured that if Taranabant makes it to the market that you will hear about it in at least one of many different forms of media, TV, Newspapers, Magazines, Internet etc. Until then stay tuned about any test findings and results here.

Trial 3 Update January 2008

In the quest to become lean, the new weightloss medication Taranabant is being tested to determine if the benefits are qualified enough to be put on the market. Currently (Jan 2008) the latest phase of testing is proceeding.
The latest study (phase 3) so far indicates that Taranabant indeed does help people lose weight. The people taking taranabant as apposed to the people taking the placebo did lose the most weight, even at lower doses Taranabant is appearing to be working which is quit surprising and could be very
beneficial in getting it approved for the market. But as with any medication there are some reported side effects that some are experiencing. Typically as the dosage went up so did some reports of anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Along with possible gastrointestinal distress and psychiatric problems.
Reports look promising that Merck may bring it before the FDA for approval perhaps the 2nd half of 2008. We will keep you updated.
